My girlfriend has been feeling pain in her lower right abdomen area. it was bad to the point where she had to go to the ER. A pap smear came back that there were abnormal cells and she needs to have another pap smear done. She came back negative for STDs. In dec. she did have her appendix taken out and thats the same area where she is feeling the pain. What could the problem be??? Please advise

Usually about 10 to 14 days prior to the next period, a woman undergoes ovulation. Some women have pain during ovulation, depending on which side the ovary is releasing an egg.

Many women find relief by taking motrin, which is an anti-inflammatory and has anti-prostaglandin effects - prostaglandin is thought to be the hormone responsible for the pain during ovulation.

Hope this helps!

Abnormal pap smear is a different issue. There are many causes of abnormal pap smears, so that is why the doctor wants to repeat the pap smear - a few weeks in between, in case there is any inflammation that caused the cell changes in the first one.

If she tells the doctor about the pain, the doctor can perform an ultrasound to take a look at the ovaries.

I can understand your concerns, and I know you are a bit apprehensive about this. This is why your girlfriend should ask for a sonogram of the ovaries.

If the pain she is having goes away in 3-4 days, you will know that it is ovulation. If it doesn't, there can be an ovarian cyst, which is usually minor, but it will be picked up on the sonogram.

Hope this helps!

Hello,

Possible causes for this pain that need to rule out are Ectopic pregnancy in Right Fallopian Tube.

Second Possibility that needs to be ruled out is stone in right ureter or right kidney.

Third possibility can be pain due to ovulation or ovarian cyst as mentioned above.

I would definitely recommend a urine test , Ultrasound examination (both abdominal and TVS).
