Question

Is it possible for me to "screw up" a pregnancy test?

Sent to Health Experts January 10, 2007 8:52 p.m.

my initial urine sample was very small. Too little to even register in the control window. So I used the same test later that day, and the results were negative. Did I invalidate the test?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

HI! Yes, unfortunately, you did invalidate the test. Once the dip-stick has been urinated on....chemical reactions take place.....and if there was not enough to turn the control line, then the chemicals reacted but did not reach where they needed to go. Wehn you urinated on it again later, it is possible (likely) that there was not enough reagent (acting chemical) to show a positive result. It's okay....we get questions like this all the time....at the price of those tests, you hate to waste! Just get another test and try it again tomorrow morning. Also, be sure that you use your first morning urine and that it is at least the day your period is due or later. I know the tests say it can be before the period and it does not have to be the 1st morning sample.......but, it is MUCH better and more reliable if it is. I am convinced that that information is a marketing ploy by the test-makers, because they will sell more tests if women get confusing or faint results!

Anyway, good luck and maybe....congratulations!! Donna RN
