Hello my friend,

I understand your concern and I will do everything I can to help you. I myself am pregnant with my second child and I take certain medications also. I understand how your wife must feel. Typically doctors recommend that patients stay on their medications unless they are known to be dangerous. There can be serious withdrawal symptoms when stopping a medication cold turkey so this should never been done. It is always best to be weaned off a medication gradually under a doctors care.

There is little data to show the reproductive safety of trazidone so as a precaution some doctors may lower the dosage or wean the patient off of it entirely. However some doctors are more liberal and insist that its okay to stay on the medication because women who have been pregnant have used it without any birth defects or complications. Some doctors prefer to have their patients weaned off trazidone and instead they use other medications such as low doses of other medications.

She may be okay to stay on the trazidone depending on what her dosage is. This would certainly need to be cleared by her doctor. She does need to be able to get her sleep and proper nutrition in order to ensure a healthy pregnancy. It might be more harmful for her to go off the medication. I recommend that you talk to her doctor and explain your concerns about this and why she needs to stay on the trazidone. I do know that my sister in law was depressed after the birth of her daughter and she needed to be on medication. She still breast fed her baby while on the medication with no problems. Her daughter got sick one time during her first year of life so it was certainly worth it for her to breastfeed. The body has the amazing ability to filter out most of the bad stuff through the placenta as a source of protection for the baby.

I hope this helps. Please click on accept otherwise please request more information. I am always here for you.

Take care
