Question

Crestor medication

Sent to Health Experts December 05, 2007 6:12 p.m.

I was on crestor for about 3 to 4 weeks this is when I found out I was pregnant. My doctor told me to stop taking the crestor which I did, but 3 months into my pregnancy they found problems with my sonograms, my daugther has a heart problem the pulmonary stenisos, and the esophagus not attach to the stomach and she may have scoliosis. This is from numerous sonograms. I did take the amino and also the test for Degeorge and they all came back great. Can this be a result of Crestor?

Hello,

Welcome to JA. Crestor is Pregnancy Category X which means that its risks outweigh benefits in pregnant women. There have been some birth defects in rats and rabbits when the drug was given at several times the maximum human rate in pregnancy. There are no controlled studies in pregnant women to see what harm Crestor would cause. Retrospecitve studies are unable to separate any defects caused by Crestor from background variances such as age, etc. Generally the drug is discontinued as soon as pregnancy is determined. It is difficult to tell if the problems your little girl has were caused by taking Crestor ot not. There is a natural increase in birth defects as women approach 30. While there is the possibility, there is no way to tell for sure.
