I've had about 3 UTI's so far during my pregnancy (17 weeks) and I just finished my last course of antibiotics. However i still feel symptomatic. Just how serious are UTIs to pregnancy and the unborn fetus?

Pregnant women are not more likely to get urinary tract infections than other women. As long as it's monitored there is generally no complications. The main thing is to make sure that the UTI doesn't enter into your kidneys. If your doctor hasn't already done so, I would recommend having another urine culture and see what comes up. (not just a urine test in the office but an actual culture sent out.

Just in case your not familiar.. Here is a list of things you can do to try to prevent any further problems as well.

  • Drink at least eight glasses of water a day.
  • Wipe yourself from front to back.
  • Empty your bladder shortly before and after sex.
  • Use a water-based lubricant during intercourse if you feel dry.
  • Don't douche.
  • Don't use feminine deodorants.
  • Change tampons and feminine pads often.
  • Wash the genital area with warm water before sex.
  • Check with your health care provider if you think your diaphragm is causing infection.
  • Wear cotton underwear.
  • Take showers instead of baths.
  • Avoid tight fighting clothing and pantyhose.
  • Hope this helps
