It all depends on how long your cycle is. Normally you would ovulate around the middle of you cycle, so for ex if you have a 28 day cycle, you will ovulate somewhere around the 14th day. Sperm live for 72 hours, while the egg only lives for 24 hours once it is released. Have you tried tracking your cycles at all? There are a few ways you could do this- you can buy a basal body thermometer and keep track of your temp and when it spikes, it means you are ovulating. You can also keep track of your vaginal mucus and when it becomes clear and stringy, this means you are ovulating. There is also what's called an ovulation microscope, that shows ferning when you are ovulating. There are also commercial ovulation test kits that you can buy. Some people use a combination of both vaginal mucus and temp tracking, and even more people collect this data and use computer software that not only tracks it, but tells you when the best fertile days are.
As far as positions you will hear many opinions about this. Some will say with the man on top is the best, because then there is no gravity which could affect the flow of sperm. Some will say that from behind is the best, as the male can have better pentration. Any position though, really doesn't make any difference as you could get pregnant anyway.
