Question

Do I need to see a doctor

Sent to Health Experts May 31, 2006 4:24 p.m.

SUnday night I began to have chills and My fever was 101. My neck, head and stomach ached and I couldn't sleep. The next morning I felt bad as well and took advil and felt better and went along as usually. That night when the advil wore off I begin to get chills and my head ached a little but I slept well. Tuesday at work I felt a little sluggish and went to the bathroom ( diahrrea) a lot. That night around 10pm my fever jumped to 101 and I had the chills and non stop diahrrea all night. My head ached as well. This morning I continued with diahrrea and began dry heaving. My fever went up to 102. Finally, I was able to sleep and my fever went down to 1oo. I stillhave a head ache and every now and then I get pains in my stomach and have to go to the bathroom. Also, I thought maybe I'm pregnant but I started my period tuesday and bleed heavy all night when I went to the bathroom, so that ruled that out. Do I need to go to the doctor since my fever is going down.

Dear Lady,

Sounds to me as if you experienced a bout of viral gastroenteritis. Any viral infection can have a disconcerting systemic effect making you feel terrrible; the textbook term is "general malaise." You do not mention nausea and vomiting, but I assume this because of "dry heaving."

The chills and feaver come when a viral load is circulating in you blood stream. These are part of the body's defense; the muscle activity acts to increase body temperature in an effort to inactivate the virus. The temperatures you give are high but not dangerous.

In situations like you experienced, the primary concern is dehydration. The fluids you lost contain more than water and should be replaced with products like Gatorade. Gatorade was originally designed to replace loss frrom excessive sweating by University of Florida football players in spring practice, and it remains much better than water or the usual soft drinks for vomiting and diarrhea.

If you are really feeing better, the vomiting and diarrhea have ended, and you don't feel light headed when you stand up, you're over the hump. If none of this is so, best to consult your primary care physician since you may need more than a home remedy.

Thanks for asking us. Let me know if you need additional help.

Best wishes,

Teaching Doc
