When a woman is pregnant and her water breaks does it happen all at once in one big gush or can it continue to leak fluid even after the water has initially broken - say for instance can it break at 11:30 pm and then there is wetness again at 2 am and again at 5 am and not just a little fluid each time but each time there is big gushes of fluid - is that possible?

You'd be surprised how much fluid the uterus holds when you are pregnant!! Also it is constantly replenishing itself. So, in answer to your question, it is possible. You should go to the hospital when your water breaks!

Reply to Kathy's Post: Does this mean that something is wrong with the baby? So everything is still ok even if water has been leaking out since 11:30 last night and is continueing to do so?

Once the water has started leaking the baby should be delivered ASAP, this is because otherwise the baby is at a higher risk of infection (due to being exposed to the outside environment).
ANother problem is what Kathy discussed...a dry labour may ensue leading to an increased risk of fetal complications (like asphyxia) and assisted delivery (like forceps and cesarian)
You need to be evaluated at the earliest in the ER for an early
delivery,
