When patients are concerned about the possibility of infection with gonorrhea, in general, we will always also treat for potential chlamydial infection, as well. This is because these two sexually transmitted infections very often travel together, and moreover, if you only treat one the other can continue to flourish and produce potential problems. This is a consideration with your question, because if you suspect gonorrhea, you would also always be treated for chlamydia as well.
First line treatment for suspected gonorrhea of the pharynx includes ceftriaxone or ciprofloxacin, with azithromycin or doxycycline added to cover potential chlamydial infection. Augmentin is used only in pregnant patients (but for 7 days, not 3) to provide coverage against chlamydia, and doesn't cover gonorrhea in that instance. While some studies have shown some efficacy of augmentin against gonorrhea, it was not completely successful at eradicating the infection.
So, no, it doesn't provide adequate coverage, and as such, you should see your physician. They will likely perform testing, and you may be started on a regimen of two or more antibiotics. Let them know about the Augmentin, as well.
Make the call, and get seen. Better to be treated properly, take care of the infection, and have it done with.
I hope you feel better, and I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions - I'm more than happy to help. Take care - Dr. Fay
