My neuro surgeon gave me a shot of cortisone in my neck for my occipital neuralgia about three weeks ago. It was the second one he had given me. It didn't feel right from the time he did it. Now I am getting terrible headaches and pain going into my shoulder. Could this be a bad reaction to the shot? Will it go away in a few weeks when the cortisone was supposed to wear off?

One more question, when you were given the first injection did you suffer from any side effects like this at all?

Reply to Cheryl K.'s Post: After the first injection it didn't seem as bad, but I also was able to take my percocet and valium any time I felt a headache coming on. So it is a little hard to say. The second one felt like he put it in a little different spot, and it also made the back of my head feel like I was hit with a baseball bat for around three days.

It sounds like a nerve may have been hit and if so you will see pain and numbness. It could also have worsened your headaches as well due to the nerve being traumatized. It should wear off when the shot does as well as they are very experienced with these injections. But I would recommend that you give them a call on Monday and let them know what is going on as with you being pregnant and unable to take medication for your headaches they need to be aware of the sid effects you are seeing. Also your body is going through some hormonal changes right now that can cause your headaches to be worse then normal. It sould wear off when the shot does but I would still recommend that you give them a call and let them know what is going on. In the meantime you can safely take Tylenol and also use some warm compresses on your neck and head and this should help to relieve some of your pain from the headache.
