Intestinal/Liver question

My mother in law is on her death bed. She lives in Mexico and I do not trust that the doctors know what they are doing because they are not in agreement. They have said she has cirhossis (sp?) of the liver. She looks about 9 months pregnant although she is very skinny. Her stomach is very distended. They said it was edema and they tried to drain it. Now they are saying it is air. They also said that either her intestines have collapsed or there is a blockage. I am not exactly sure. They say there isn't anything that they can do for her and there isn't any hope. I understand there maybe no hope, however, I am not altogether convinced. If this is the case, is there anything that can either ease her pain or at least allow her to drink something or eat something. They have not allowed her to eat for days. She is on an IV. She is 70 years old.
Thanks.
