My girlfriend started taking birth control pills on May ...

Sent to Health Experts August 11, 2006 1:48 a.m.

My girlfriend started taking birth control pills on May 29th. After a month she switched to the NUVARING vaginal ring. For the third month(which started on july 24th) she switched back to birth control pills. Is it safe to have sex without worrying about her becomming pregnant? My girlfriend told me it is safe because she used the birth control pilsl for a month and then switched to the NUVARING for the second month as if she was using the pill, and on july 24th ( for the 3rd month ) went back to the pill. On the NUVARING pamphlet it says that it is okay to switch from oral contraceptice to NUVARING, but is it the same backwards.. switching from NUVARING back to the pill?
I guess my concern is if its safe to have sex now without worrying about pregnancy and if not how long should we wait?

Hi Customer (name blocked for privacy)-

If she started the pills during her first 24 hours of her period (e.g., if she took out her NuvaRing and then started her period a few days later, and then during the first 24 hours of the period she started the pills), she should be protected.

However, if she started her pills any time other than during the first 24 hours, you need to be using a backup birth control method during the first month of the pills to be safe.

While the chances of her becoming pregnant are low in a switch like this, they still exist. Better to be safe than sorry.

Sincerely,
Emily
