If she started the pills during her first 24 hours of her period (e.g., if she took out her NuvaRing and then started her period a few days later, and then during the first 24 hours of the period she started the pills), she should be protected.
However, if she started her pills any time other than during the first 24 hours, you need to be using a backup birth control method during the first month of the pills to be safe.
While the chances of her becoming pregnant are low in a switch like this, they still exist. Better to be safe than sorry.
