Hello,
It would not be a good idea to have you wife become oregnant until she can discuss these medications and the reason she takes them with her GYN.
Studies have not been conducted with morphine sulfate. It is also not known whether morphine can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity. For that reason, morphine should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed. It has been determined that Morphine readily crosses the placental barrier and if administered during labor, may lead to respiratory depression of the baby.
Historically, lithium has been associated with a high incidence of a rare congenital heart defect; Epstein's anomaly, a prolapse of the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle.
Women who use Depakote during pregnancy have normal, healthy babies. Certain types of defects are increased (especially if Depakote is taken during the first 3 months of pregnancy) but they are still relatively uncommon.
Ativan is in the FDA pregnancy category D. This means that Ativan is known to be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.
Zoloft is a pregnancy Category B, which means that although no specific defects have been identified in offspring, there have been no controlled studies of this medication in pregnancy. Check with the GYN.
I am assuming your wife may have bipolar disoder. If you are planning on having a child, it would be extemely important to consult with her psychiatrist to begin a treatment plant that would manage her condition, but be safer during conception and pregnancy.
