how do you know if your pregnant? My girlfriend has recently had a couple kidney infections but she feels sick, mainly after eating McDonalds, and we have had unprotected sex recently but we think it might be another kidney infection.

The only sure way to find out about pregnancy is to do a pregnancy test. Ideally a test works best after day one of her missed period. Or a clinic could do a blood test, these are more accurate. If you are still within 72 hours of the unprotected sex you could get the Emergency Contraception pill.

Assuming she is not pregnant, this scare should be a prompt to think about what contraception you need to choose. Condoms have a lot of positives in reducing transfer of STDs and the virus associated with cervical cancer so I would look at this as your first option. If it ever happens again, get down to your pharmacy, clinic or doctor within 24 hours to stand the best chance of stopping an unplanned pregnancy.
