I am 11 weeks pregnant and horribly constipated. Before I was pregnant, I was still pretty badly constipated and I know it runs in my family. My doctor told me to start taking Citracul but it doesn't seem to be working. I was only taking one tablet a day but have now picked it up to 4x's a day. Do you have any suggestions? It's been almost 5 days since I've had a bowel movement.

You may need an enema to help get things going. Other products that are safe during pregnancy as well include: Metamucil and Milk of Magnesia

Some of the most common things you can do to help include: Eating a well-balanced, high-fiber diet that includes beans, bran, whole grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Drink plenty of water and exercise regularly. Take your knees and bring them to your chest, this promotes bowel exercises.

Hope this helps, If you need anything else please feel free to ask. If you found this helpful don't forget to click the *ACCEPT* button and leave *POSITIVE* feedback.

As I mentioned earlier, I was always constipated. One time I remember I didn't go for 9 days and then ended up taking a laxative. The laxative DEFINITELY helped!!   My stomach doesn't hurt or anything and I don't have any flatulance (sp?). Am I harming the baby by not going? I think enema's do not feel good, correct? Where would I get one? Do I have to go to the hospital for that?

There is no harm to the baby if you don't go. However even though you hadn't mentioned if you had pain or not, I guess I assumed you may be in pain.

Some people do have a BM every day, while there are some that only go every few days. When you begin to have a lot of pain or gas pressure, that is when it become a medical problem. As long as you eat as I stated above, etc. and even do a daily Metamucil etc. then you body should eliminate on your own schedule. If there is no pain, then that is fine. If there is pain, then you are needing extra help and since this has been like this prior to the pregnancy too, following up with a Gastroenterologist would be best. But you don't have to have a BM every day as long as you feel fine other wise.

Hope this helps and (Hope I understand what your saying Hun) by the way, congrats on the new baby too.

Thank you for the reply. I'm sorry I didn't clarify earlier that I wasn't in any pain. I was always told that I have a serious medical issue b/c I don't go every day. That scared me but I didn't think I had to be b/c like I said I wasn't in any pain. I've probably jinxed myself, hahaha!! I always thought you had to go every day but I'm happy to hear that some people only go a couple times a week. I did go to a Gastro and was diagnosed w/moderate acid reflux and hiatal hernia and was put on Nexium. Nexium did make me a little more regular but now that I am pregnant, I've gone bad again. But I am still on Nexium even during pregnancy? Is there something better than Citracul? I've heard Colace is good, is that true? Is benefiber or Metamucil better than Cetricul? Or is Colace the best? Or do they all work the same?

No, you don't have to go every day to be "normal" if you have a regular routine of every 2-3 days then that is your schedule. As far as the different products, if you look at the ingredients, they all should be the same. It's just additional fiber for your daily diet. Everyone doesn't eat all the food groups each day and it may even be your pre-natal vitamins causing a delay in BM's too. But if you are in no pain, or having pain from gas building up, I wouldn't worry about it. Just stay with what your doctor asked, and you can still use it once a day. Just in crease some fiber foods too and lots of water.

So do enjoy your pregnancy eat well and sounds like you will be fine..
