Question

I think I might be pregnant?

Sent to Health Experts September 25, 2006 4:30 p.m.

Hi I'am 20 years of age and I have been on ortho tricyclen for almost 5 years now. I work in the oilfield it's pretty far away from everything and I forgot my pills at home. I also work with my fiancee so we awere having sex. I never even thought about it because I didn't even think I could have children just from the chances we have taking in the past but I am kinda worried now just because I still haven't taken my birth control pill and I haven't gotten my period. I didn't want to take the pill until I was done my period, was that bad should I have taken it right when I picked them up or should I be worried. Get a pregnancy test? please if you have any information i would greatly appreciate your time.
Thanx
Kara

Just because you have not gotten pregnant before when you are not using birth control does not mean that cannot be pregnant now. Home pregnancy tests are 97% + accurate when done correctly -- AFTER 14 or more days from the date of possible conception. Read more here.

I know, what I'am trying to say I guess is that being off birth control for 1 month is obviously not good, but from being on it for so long would this make my cjances higher or the same? My dovtor said I would probably have to be off the pill for at least 2-3 months to get pregnant. Or at least a higher risk of it. I hope I gave yo more information this time.
thanx

Kara,

Thank you for replying.

Since birth control pills supply hormones which essentially fool your body into stopping ovulation -- it is reasonable that the effect of those hormones will not go away all at once. This being the case, it does seem reasonable that your chances of becoming pregnant increased gradually after discontinuing birth control pills.

This means that there is a chance that you are pregnant -- although, perhaps not as much chance as there would be if you had not been on birth control.

However, this is all speculation. The only way to tell for sure at this point is to get tested. As I said before, home pregnancy tests are 97% + accurate when done correctly -- AFTER 14 or more days from the date of possible conception. If you are still unsure after doing a home test -- your doctor can do an in-office blood test for pregnancy which is even more accurate.
