i have not had a normal menstural period in 4 months. i had an ovarian cyst removed by open surgery almost a year and a half ago (if it makes a difference). my periods have been almost completley brown with each one there has been less red, the last there was none and the others from 1-2 days in the middle. i am sexually active and we do not use protection, anyone know what could be wrong?

KmbrlyDg,

Brown discharge typically means old blood, that the body is just trying to get rid of. So unless there is a foul type odor, this is quite normal. Other reasons for period abnormalities include stress, weight gain/loss, thyroid, hormonal imbalance, infection, illness, medications, polyp, cyst, amongst other reasons. If you feel you may be pregnant your best bet is to see your doctor for a blood pregnancy test, as this is the most accurate way of testing. If it comes back negative, your doctor can do further testing to determine what the exact cause may be.

Reply to Annie's Post: But why would by whole period be "old blood"?

It could be any of the reasons I mentioned above. A cervical erosion can also cause this- this is a small inflamed patch on the cervix . There is no way to know for sure unless an exam is done.

Symptoms of ovarian cancer include persistent abdominal discomfort or cramping pain, pelvic pressure or low back discomfort, persistent bloating or intestinal gas that is not relieved by home treatment measures, decreased energy level, a change in bowel habits, such as constipation or diarrhea, abnormal vaginal bleeding, especially after menopause among women who are not using any hormonal medications, a change in bladder habits, such as urinary frequency or urgency, nausea or lack of appetite, and pain with sexual intercourse. So no- I do not think what you are experiencing would be ovarian cancer.
