Question

I have been taking birth control pills for a little ...

Sent to Health Experts October 17, 2006 12:14 p.m.

I have been taking birth control pills for a little over 5 years now. My fiance and I are talking about me getting off of them. When I first started taking them it was to regulate my period and that was for 3 months. After the 3 month supply was up I went back to being irregular again. So I have been on them not just for that reason but to prevent pregnancy ever since. Are there any statistics on women getting pregnant and how soon after they quit birth control? Also I have heard that you need to wait for at least 3 to 6 months after getting off the pill before trying to conceive because it can cause problems with the baby but I have also heard that it doesn't matter and you don't have to wait. If I get off birth control now are there any precautions I should take or anything special I should do or can I just stop taking them? I wouldn't want to harm my self or take a chance on something being wrong with the baby if I were to get pregnant.
