Ok I was diagnosed with uterine fibroids about 1 year ago. I was put on birth control to stop the bleeding but I've been off birth control for a couple of months now. Now in the beginning of September I had a normal period and 1 week later another period came on and I haven't had one since then. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. Its been about 5 or 6 weeks since I had a period. Could it just be taking a while because I had 2 periods back to back or could I be pregnant?

trinsmom,

It's possible that it could be your body getting used to not being on the hormones anymore- it usually takes a few months for your body to get used to not having the hormones anymore. As nothing is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy except abstinence, it could also be possible that pregnancy occurred. If the 2nd period was not normal, it's possible that it could have been implantation bleeding. Implantation bleeding occurs a bit earlier than expected, and it is scanty, spotty, pinkish and not red and heavy like a period, and does not follow the normal pattern of a period (light to heavy to light). Other reasons for period abnormalities include stress, weight gain/loss, thyroid, hormonal imbalance, infection, illness, medications, polyp, cyst, amongst other reasons. If you feel you may be pregnant your best bet is to see your doctor for a blood pregnancy test, as this is the most accurate way of testing. If it comes back negative, your doctor can do further testing to determine what the exact cause may be.

Reply to Annie's Post: OK so would the fibroids cause a scenario like this to occur? The only differnce in the 2nd period that I had 7 days later was the length, it only lasted about 3 or 4 days as opposed to 7. It was the same consistency and color. Could that have still been implantation? So being that that was around the 11th of September that the last period went off could a home test be that inaccurate?

trinsmom,

If the bleeding was like your normal period, then pregnancy could not be the cause, as it would be a different color and consistency. In my years of experience I have seen home tests inaccurate, and especially the new digital ones are having issues with giving false results. This is why I always recommend a blood test. I do not thing pregnancy is an issue though since your bleeding was not like implantation bleeding. Most likely it is a hormonal imbalance that is going on, caused by the hormones. The only way to know for sure would be to see your doctor to get your levels checked.
