Question

I am 7 weeks pregnant and taking 2 Flintstone vitamins ...

Sent to Health Experts October 21, 2006 12:09 p.m.

I am 7 weeks pregnant and taking 2 Flintstone vitamins per day as my "prenatal vitamin". I feel a cold coming on, so drank an Airborne today without thinking. Now I'm worried about hypervitaminosis A causing birth defects and freaking myself out. Would this one dose of Airborne likely cause a problem? (It contains 5000 IU Vit A, the same dose as I received w/ my vitamins (although 20% of the latter is from beta carotene) Should I be a wreck about this??

Hello,

My first suggesion is that you need to be on prenatal vitamins. Flintstone vitamins are ok for kids, but do not support the total recommended vitamin requirements during pregnancy.

A one time drink of Airborne is of no concern today, but I do not recommend that you continue using this product without discussing this with your OB.

It would take long term use of excessive vitamins to cause damage.

Thank you for your reply. I am concerned, because my OB said that 2 Flintstone vitamins would be comparable to a prenatal vitamin. Is this not so?

As this has been prescribed by your OB, you can continue.

Having checked the contents of the Flintstones, my main concern was that you would be receiving adequate folic acid and iron, which Flinstones does support.
