I have been seeing a Psychiatrist now for many months fro a multitude of just bad events in my like. I have am suffering from depression and severe anxiety and panic attacks. He has prescribed citalopram for depression, but this does not help in any way with the panic atacks or my ability to just stop worrying about what is going to happen in 2 seconds, later in the day , next week next month. I have taken a few of my wifes Clonazepam and this helps trmendously, however; to date, he will not prescribe this and really waon''t tell me why. Could use some guidance on what the deal may be. - Thanks

Citalopram (or celexa) has been shown to have anti-anxiety effects for many people. The challenge with clonazepam (or klonopin) is that it is a benzodiazepine (albeit a long-acting one) - which is both DEA restricted, and has abuse potential. Having had some patients who have abused clonazepam, he may have some reluctance to prescribe it.

Another alternative, which you may consider asking for is quetiapine (seroquel). This is an antipsychotic medication, which also has very good anti-anxiety effects. It can be used along with the citalopram, and in low doses can be quite effective.

Let me know if this helps, and if you have further questions.

Dr. Eric
