I am 47 years old and have been having chronic back trouble diagnosed as degenerative disk disease. They''ve put me on various pain management drugs. In the last couple of days I''ve started waking with numb fingers and numbness in part of my left hand and partial numbness in my right hand. I also cannot feel anything. It takes a few minutes and much painful manipulation of the hands before the feeling comes back. What is the possible causes and should I be seeking emergency care for this?

Female, Age: 47, New Hampshire

Already Tried:
just massage and exercise/movement; also tried sleeping on my back

Hello,

The numbness indicates that the degeneration of the discs have increased and is putting pressure on your spinal cord.

Since injections have no helped, it is very likely that you may need surgery to get the disc removed.

You do not need emergency treatment right away, but you do need to be seen by your doctor as early as possible for a re-evaluation of your spinal discs and for planning out a treatment procedure.

I hope this helps.
