Question

I was on generic zoloft and did well on it for 3

Sent to Health Experts January 17 11:07 a.m.

I was on generic zoloft and did well on it for 3 months but It could tell it wasnt strong enough like I remember zoloft working for me in the past. So I switched over to Zoloft (brand name) and Im taking 37 mg a day. It has helped tremendously with my thinking and memory but the side effects are bad. Numbness with my face and mouth, muschles feel like they are tightening and so Im thinking about going down to 25mg instead of going up on it. And I thought if 25 doesnt work that I can switch to generic again at 25 only (I did go up on the generic 37mg and it started to numb my body and affect my muscles. So as last resort, 25 mg generic is what worked for me without those side effects, it lifted my depression but still didnt do it. What is your suggestion?

The generic zoloft didnt help me with depression completly. It helped a little with out the bad side effects of numbness. It took a good amount of time, probabaly 1 month for me to get through the side effects of hostility, irratablility, etc.. I consider this mild side effects. BUt as I do recall with the genric that I remember so many times wanting to stop it cause of how out of it and not myself I felt. So, It did take me a while, not a few days or 1 week. By the 3rd month I was mentally clear but still depressed.

I increased the dose but started to have numbness and so I said no way, cause lexapro did that to me.
Will the numbness go away like with the other symptoms??
Right now Im on 37mg of brand name zoloft and the depression is gone! It has helped me in all ways with panic, social fears, pms, and ocd. But I guess Im just concerned about the numbness of my face and sometimes chest. It seems like daily my side effects do change. Like I can sleep now,but now my lower back hurts and my muschles ache along with my eyes being sensitive/sleepy.
The weight gain is alot more than when I was on 25mg generic zoloft. Im probably 30 pounds over my weight instead of 15-20 over.
I do take the med at night. If I can cut the depression with little dose possible thats what I want to do. Do you think I should stay on the dose Im on and give it time or go down to 25 and see if it still works with little side effects?

Dear Customer (name blocked for privacy),

Thanks for the reply. It seems to me that apart from being very sensitive to the increase in serotonin levels at brain, there is a strong component of anxiety besides depression in your dignosis.
Your somatic symptoms/side effects of back pain, numbness, muscle aches may in fact be the symptoms of anxiety rather than true side effects of sertaline.
To be honest i am more worried about your weight gain of even 15-20 pounds on such a low dose of Sertaline which is not acceptable.Couple of suggestions:
  • The numbness on increased dose should go away in few weeks at the most.
  • I agree with staying on the current dose and give the side effects little time to go away.
  • The other great medication to try is Effexor XR- serotonin NE reuptake inhibitor which can help both depression , panic, anxiety as well as weight gain problem.
  • But given that you are so sensitive to psychotropics one has to start effexor with really low doses and take a bezodiazepine like Klonopin for the frist few weeks till you reach a good dose.
  • Exercise like walking, yoga can also help.
Good Luck
