At age 54, I have my first positive case of strep. I let it go too long, since I "never" get it. How do I treat the swelling in my neck, the painful glands, and what, probably, is the injection of an 8-day somethingcillin that I was given at a Tennessee hospital during a road trip!?

Optional Information:
Female, Age: 54, Oklahoma

Already Tried:
an injection of something--I think she said methicillin?

Okay,

First, you should see improvement in your symptoms from the antibiotic by 72 hours. If you haven't seen any improvement in symptoms by then, call your doctor and let them know.

To treat the symptoms that you have now I would take either ibuprofen or naproxen sodium for the inflammation and pain. Follow a soft diet. Cold drinks and milkshakes are especially good. You can garle warm water with a little bit of table salt or a liquid antacid to help with the sore throat as well.

I hope this has been helpful. Please let me know if you need anything else. T

And, how long should I expect the neck swelling and protruding glands to last? I got the injection about 30 hours ago. Fever is gone, but everything still hurts, including my whole body!

OK. I guess I'm too impatient! Ibuprophen it is. Maybe I'll lose some excess pounds eating only chicken noodle soup!
