If a 57 year-old woman were to receive an overdose of 800 mg. of Toprol XL and survive, how possible is it that her renal failure and Addison's disease three years later could be caused from the medicinal overdose?

Hello,

An overdosage of Toprol will not cause any effect on the kidneys, nor will it cause Addison's disease.

The main effect is on the heart - there will be bradycardia, low blood pressure, cardiac arrest etc. The other effects are nausea, vomiting loss of consciousness etc. These effects are immediately after taking the overdose.

There will be no effect of the drug after 3 years of the overdosage.

You can read more about Toprol overdosage here:

I hope this helps.

But could the cardiac damage already have been done in the ten days that she took the medicine so that she is still experiencing problems three years later?
