Hello Marjorie
Fuchs dystrophy is a disease of the cornea. The cornea is the thin clear structure one would put a contact lens on. The cornea is clear because there are cells that help pump fluid out of the cornea. Fuchs is a disorder where the cells that pump the fluid out of the cornea are dysfunctional. There are people with Fuchs that is so advanced their cornea has spontaneously become cloudy. The concern with cataract surgery is that the ultrasound (phaco) used during cataract surgery can further damage the pumping action of the cells. This can lead to corneal decompensatin and the cornea can swell and become cloudy. When deciding on cataract surgery timing, sooner is better as the more dense the cataract becomes, the more ultrasound energy needs to be used during surgery and the more likely Fuchs becomes clinically significant. I usually try to get the cataract out as soon as it becomes symptomatic. I hope this helps with your question, if not just let me know, Regards
