4-5 weeks ago I had a great deal of pain & bloating in the upper abdomen - 2 episodes one lasting 3 hours and 1 a week later 7 hours. I had an ultra sound of the gall bladder & right kidney which found 2 gallstones and 3 benign cysts on the kidney. I then had a high density radio isotope scan of the gall bladder last Wednesday. The technician said the fluid was unable to get to the gallbladder due to the duct most likely being plugged. There is no pain, but if the bile is not going through is not this putting undue pressure on the liver and/or pancreas. I have a consultation this Monday with a surgeon, as my gastroenterologist says the gall bladder must be removed....

Greetings.

If the bile does not flow to gallbladder it does not cause pressure on the liver or pancreas. The gall bladder function is to store the bile and when we eat food this stored bile is liberated. But some bile is flown through the common bile duct which comes from the liver, throughout the day. So despite the flow to gallbladder being blocked the common bile duct (CBD) keeps on flowing the bile from the liver and not causing the pressure or pent up bile. Gall stones, pain and the cystic duct (through which bile flow to gallbladder) being plugged/blocked, are all indications for the removal of gall bladder (cholecystectomy). Still before the surgery esophagogastroduodenoscopy (upper GI endoscopy) is essential to rule out any other associated pathology/disease.
