PAP/LEEP PROCEDURE

Abnormal pap (high dysplacia) followed by a LEEP procedure a few days ago. The dr. warned me of what I would experience. She used a needle and injected novacane (I think) into the cervix to help numb it before the procedure. We waited for a couple minutes and she did it. It ended up being EXTREMELY PAINFUL, I started crying and shaking badly (my reaction shocked me). I felt dazed and angry and I NEVER want to go through that again. From what I have read online, it should only be minimally painful if at all. It seems like my dentist has to give me extra numbing medicine and wait a little longer. Do you think I wasn't numb enough, or that it hurts everyone because there are so many nerve endings in the cervis? I can't believe I had to experience that, with all the technology we have these days. Can LEEP procedures be done under general anesthesia? I am pretty tough, it's not that I am weak. Do I have a bad OB/GYN?

Hi Ash

What a horrid ordeal for you! When I had the same procedure done, I didn't feel a thing. After the anesthetic wore off, I had pretty bad cramps, but during the procedure no problems here.

That being said, before I would think you had a bad OBGYN, if you need more novocaine for dental work, you probablly will need it for other procedures as well. Your doctor was probably giving you a standard dose.

While we can't go back and fix it, perhaps this doctor will appreciate it if you report back to her what you think, and what happened. It could be a learning experience for her, and may help her patients in the future.

I know this doesn't help you any at all. I hope you are okay now though.

Hope that helps,

Kerry

Reply to Kerry's Post: I was really angry about the whole thing. I feel like you are so lucky that you didn't feel it! I don't know if you had to have your membranes stripped when you were pregnant, but it felt about as painful as that. I guess you are right, I would need more novocaine and maybe I would ask her to wait a few more minutes for it to kick in. I am okay now, but do you know if LEEP can be done with any other means of pain management?
