Trochanteric bursitis may occur as a result of :
* Acute trauma, such as a fall or tackle, causing the patient to land the lateral hip region
* More commonly, repetitive (cumulative) trauma is involved. Such trauma is caused with repetitive contracture of gluteus medius and/or the iliotibial band during running or walking.
* Conditions that predispose patients to this bursitis include underlying lower leg gait and back or sacroiliac disturbances.
* It may co-exist in people who have osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) of the hips or lower back.
* It may also occur in some people who have scoliosis or unequal leg length.
In many cases, the cause is unknown.
Hence, the lesion that you are describing "chondromalacia of the patella with a degenerative tear of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus " can predispose to trochanteric bursitis since they will lead to lower limb gait disturbance.
