Sent to Health Experts December 19, 2005 3:05 p.m.

For years I have been treated for dyshydrosis on my hands. For the last 2 yrs, it seems to settled on just my index finger. At first it tingles then itches and swells involving the first two joints. then becomes quit painfull. Last serveal weeks, blisters and finally I loose the skin on top and my nail grows in deformed. Any suggestions beyond Triamcinolon cream?

Usually an over-the-counter topical steroid ointment should provide relief of itching and swelling. If your Triamcinolon isn't working, you can ask your physician to prescribe a stronger steroid preparation.

Some other tips to decrease the discomfort:

Use vinyl gloves lined with cotton when your hands come in contact with household chemicals or detergents, and try to use very mild soaps with no perfumes. Also, avoid handling acidic fruits with your bare hands...use gloves because the acids can irritate your condition.
