Question

My 16-year-old daughter has unexplained pain in her calves.

Sent to Health Experts February 20, 2006 10:56 a.m.

My 16-year-old daughter has unexplained pain in her calves. If she stands on her tip-toes, hours later she will have moderate to severe pain in her calves. A clearly stumped orthopedic physician ordered a electromyagram and nerve conduction study. An MRI makes more sense to me. Should she have the test?

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 16

Already Tried:
Blood tests and physical exams normal. Child does have very muscular calves.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

the nerve conduction study would suggest the need for mri. The question is 'where'is the problem. is it spinal or more distal in the legs themselves? the emg (nerve study) can locate the area of compromise. this would eliminate unnecessary radiation to your daughter if the problem is not in the spine. Short hamstrings etc which I am sure your surgeon is looking for would not require mri. She may end up with the mri, but as the mother I would want to be darn sure we needed to go that route before I irradiated my child.
best wishes
