What should be done if a person's lingual frenulum has been torn? Will it heal on its own? Is it an important tissue?

Hello orr,

The lingual frenulum itself is not a particularly crucial tissue. A minor terror or laceration should heal on its own though it may take some time because of the very frequent movement of the tongue. In years past when a child was thought to possibly be tongue-tied a few millimeters of the frenulum was sometimes actually clipped with surgical scissors on the theory that this would free up the tongue. I do not believe this procedure is performed much in current practice.
