Sent to Health Experts May 15, 2006 6:35 p.m.

I am a white male age 53 with hypertension and am a diabetic.

I have had an elevated wbc count (between 11 and 12) for over 10 years. It has been normal in some cases but most of the time seems to remain high. The only percentages that is off is the monocytes at 10.4%. This last time the wbc was 12.7 with the breakdown as follows: Monocytes 10.4%,neutrophils 52.7,lymphocytes 34.3% ,basophil .8% and eosinophil 1.8%.
Does this indicate a underlying problem with bone marrow? Or is this "normal"?

Hi, Normal Monocyte Count : Normal Adult Range: 0 - 9%
Optimal Adult Reading: 4.5

It looks like elevated. It may be an underlying problem with bone marrow Some of the causes are as below:

Certain bacterial infections, such as tuberculosis, syphilis, subacute bacterial endocarditis ; many protozoal and rickettsial infections; lymphomas, leukemias, myelodysplasias, lipid storage diseases; recovery from acute infection; carcinoma of stomach ; collagen vascular disease, such as lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis; sarcoidosis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and chronic high-dose steroid therapy; MS.

I suggest to you to see a Hemathologist for further evaluation.
