There are currently 374 recognized mental illness diagnoses --
according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
-- Fourth Edition (DSM-IV). No one would ever be diagnosed with
every one of these disorders.
When a person is diagnosed with more than one disorder -- they are said
to have 'multiple diagnoses'. It is also common for someone to be
diagnosed as mentally ill -- and as having a substance-abuse problem at
the same time. These people are usually referred to as
'dual-diagnosed'. There is also a mental illness diagnosis called
'multiple personality disorder' -- which is commonly confused with --
but is not -- schizophrenia.
