I have a question: My brother has had a hacking cough ...

I have a question: My brother has had a hacking cough for about 10 yrs and recently he has started throwing up blood. He is in the hosptiol because the doctors have found holes in his lungs. He is a smoker and he eats Halls like candy. What could this be?
