What is toddler diarhear

My baby who is now 2 years old has been diagnosed with infantile diarhear ..he eats very little food and what he does eat does not stay in very long..I can have up to 5 dirty nappies a day with varying degrees of diarhear..sometimes he will do a formed stool but not very often..can i help him with a type of diet or is this something which will eventually go away.
