Question

I have a 3.5 year old boy, and he is now toilet trained.

I have a 3.5 year old boy, and he is now toilet trained. During this process I have discovered that he really needs to hold down his penis in order for his urine to properly spray into the toilet - if he doesn't touch it, the stream goes straight ahead, if not slightly up in the air. When we were using the toilet seat cover, often his spray would reflect off the plastic cover.

Is this normal (his spray going straight/up), and having to press down on his penis to make the spray hit the toilet and something that he grows out of over time?

Yes this can actually be normal as everyone has a different amount of force in which the urine is released and as he gets older and taller this will seem less obvious to you. If you were able to remember being that young this was something that was most likely the same for you, but it is good that this concerns you, nice to see a responsible and concerned parent such as you!!!! If he does seem to continue to have this problem you would want to make sure that there are no possible blockages but this is actually normal, my son was the same way and being a women it had me wondering as well until I asked the physician I was working for at the time and he explained it to me as well.

Are you sure? My wife was actually at our peditrician today, and she was concerned, so has booked an appointment for our son for later today. She said that if at all the pee is spraying up if we don't touch the penis, it might mean that his urethra is in the wrong spot? Does this sound right to you, or again, is this normal. Just to be clear, if we just let him stand up and urinate, the spray goes up, and sprays all over the top of the toilet and wall, doesn't get into the toilet. If he holds his penis down, then it will eventually at the right angle, go into the toilet...

ACCEPTED Check Mark

If it is spraying directly up this far then yes there is a chance that the urethra has a partial blockage or is in the wrong spot so it is best to have him seem so they can do a physical examination and further evaluate. In most cases the urine will spray upward until they get a little taller and learn how to better angle to urine but if it is actually spraying the wall this is more excessive then it should be, although in most cases it is normal to have to angle the penis in a downward angle to make sure it is directed into the toilet. Some men can actually direct the spray of urine without holding the penis in a downward angle while others always have to hold the penis to allow for it to be directed into the toliet bowl. In most cases while they are younger this can be a normal occurance especially since they may hold their urine longer then they should and the force is stronger then it would be if they went to the bathroom as soon as the urge is felt. It sounds as though it should be further evaluted to be sure but yes this can actually be normal when they are young and learning how to angle their urine where it needs to go.
