Is there any kind of low intrest or grants to make your home more handicapped friendly. We are either high low income or low middle income.Too much for help locally. Most of our income is derived from S.S.D. Long term insurance and a part time self employment job. Our bills where ser up according to my husband income prior. By the time we pay the mortgage, Med B andD on both of us and now a large mobility van payment ther is nothing left for food even. I need to put a bathroom on and a large closet that is handicapped friendly. I also need to do some work on front and in the kitchen. I have tried and tried to figure out how and am at witts end.Why did we not sell the house when he became didabled, we owed more than we could sell for.my husbands credit has suffered severly and mine seems to be hurt from all of the inquieries made on credit when looking for a mobility van. Desperate for help on these questions. Thanks We are not 65.

Try these resources for possible assistance:

Missouri Assistive Technology

4731 South Cochise, Suite 114
Independence, MO 64055-6975
Voice: (800) 647-8557 (in-state only) or (816) 373-5193
TTY: (800) 647-8558 (in-state only) or (816) 373-9315
FAX: (816) 373-9314

Ask if they have any kind of applicable loan (or loan guarantee) or grant program -- and/or if they know of any other applicable state or local resources.

Also, check out these Federal Housing-related resourses for persons with disabilities.

You should also check with your City's Housing Authority to see if they have any accessibility renovation grant or loan programs.

Also, check with area banks, savings and loans, and credit unions to see if you might be able to get a refinancing loan which would enable you to combine your outstanding balances on your house and accessible van -- in order to combine (and reduce) those monthly payments.

Click above Link(s) (if any) for additional information.

Let me know if you need more input. If not, thanks for the opportunity to assist you... Please honor my efforts by Clicking the green 'Accept' button (located within this post -- above-right). Adding a bonus -- should you wish to do so -- would be warmly welcomed.

Good Luck!

Reply to Steve -- a.k.a. Oreport's Post: Thank you, As for the local i have already checked state and local and as foar as I can tell we make to much.I have also been to fha and they did have a program for credit challanged disabled pepole but, I have not been able to locate info locally for the local community group we would need to go any further. The local banks will not touch us because ironically we make to little and the fact my husbands credit went down hill. One bank my bank actually told me to my face, that regardlise of why the credit went down hill we would need some one compinant to sign. We are not mentaly handicapped.

I know that your situation is frustrating -- I have a lifelong disability and I am on SSDI myself. It is very important that you do not give up. It is also important that you not pass over benefits which you might otherwise be eligible for -- because you mistakenly assume that you will not be eligible.

Regarding FHA -- simply look in the Federal Government listings in the front your phone book for anything that says 'FHA' -- call them and inquire about the program you mentioned. If you cannot find the proper FHA office -- or if you need advocacy assistance in accessing any other programs/benefits -- contact a local office of a member of your United States congressional delegation (e.g. either U.S. House member or senator) they have staff people on board who are paid to do constituent assistance. Your tax monies pay their salaries -- that is what they are there for.

You do not mention having contacted the Missouri Assistive Technology Program -- You Should Do This. They may have some programs or contacts that neither of us is aware of. Among other things, you need to specifically ask them if they have (or know of) a loan guarantee program for accessibility/assistive technology related loans.

There are many programs/resources/contacts located on the Federal housing page that I referenced in my previous answer -- you need to make sure that you explore every contact and resource possibility.

If you have not already done so you should also contact your nearest Independent Living Resource Center. Every state has them, they are the primary local access point for services/resources to help people with disabilities be able to/continue to live independently.

Good Luck!
