Atopic dermatitis is a scaley, itchy, red skin condition.
The basis of treatment is to provide moisturization for dryness, allay pruritus (itchiness), and manage inflammation (redness) of the lesions.
LactiCare HC, Cortaid, Westcort, Dermacort, and DermaGel (hydrocortisone) are mild topical corticosteroids mixed in petrolatum for facial application. They have mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid effects, resulting in anti-inflammatory activity. Use 1% ointment daily. Apply sparingly to affected areas 2 or 3 times a day; discontinue when cleared.
Betatrex, Valisone, Luxiq (betamethasone valerate) are medium-strength topical corticosteroids for body areas. Decreases inflammation by suppressing migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and reversing capillary permeability. Affects production of lymphokines and has inhibitory effect on Langerhans cells. Use 0.05-0.1% ointment. Apply topically 2 or 3 times a day until response; discontinue when cleared.
Atarax (hydroxyzine hydrochloride) 25-50 mg 3 or 4 times a day as needed. Atarax is an antihistamine with antipruritic, anxiolytic, and mild sedative effects.
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) 25-50 mg 3 or 4 times a day as needed. Benadryl is an antihistamine used for pruritus and allergic reactions.
