After total hysterectomy and ovary removal, should I still have a gynecological exam to check for vaginal abnormalities along with breast exam. Also should GYN be doing a rectal exam to check for polyps??? What else should he check for? Had everything taken out.

Hello,

It is still important to have a GYN exam every year. The exam should include a pelvic exam, rectal exam and a breast exam. You should also have a mammography every year.

During a rectal exam, the GYN would most likely not be able to determine if you have a colon polyp. This requires a flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. The GYN would be be performing a hemocult smear which would determine if you had blood in your stool which would require follow-up by a colorectal specialist. He might even send you home with a test you would perform and return to his office.

Reply to Deborah's Post: What would he be looking for in a pelvic exam since i have had a TAH/BSO. Would he be checking vaginal walls for any abnormalities??
