Christina - thank you for your question, and I understand your concern. Your experiences, unfortunately, are far too common these days.
It's hard to answer your question without more information. It sounds like your physician had access to some lab results, perhaps, that may have indicated that your kidneys aren't functioning totally at the level they should be, and so perhaps he/she wanted you to see your nephrologist (kidney specialist) prior to trying to conceive. You definitely want your kidneys to be functioning as highly as possible prior to attempting pregnancy, because it is a profound strain on the system, and it will add workload to your kidneys. If they are already struggling, then the added work of having to support a baby could be a very bad thing.
If you want, you could try and get in to see another nephrologist. Waiting lists these days can be very bad for certain physicians, and I have tried (when I was waiting to see a physician) seeing one of their partners or associates. In some instances, I actually preferred those new physicians! So call your nephrologist, tell them you need to get in earlier, ask if there is someone else available, and if not, then ask for the name of another nephrologist in your area. They should be willing to provide you with one.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions. I'm more than happy to try and help.
Take care - Dr. Fay
