masturbation (risk of loss of intercourse)
Sent to Health Experts October 06 11:57 PM

I am a 29 year male in good health (as far as I know). However, I masturbate quite often throughout the day. Sometimes out of actual sexual desire, and other times out of boredom. I have no religious compunctions about masturbation, and I do not necessarily want to stop masturbating out of shame. However, I am finding it more difficult to reach orgasm when I am with my partner (without a condom it is much easier). I have almost never had an orgasm from oral sex in my entire life, which most men find easy to do. Have I overstimulated myself? What can I do to reteach my body to enjoy another person? What other professions could give me reliable advice on this subject?

Hi saus,

I have counseled many Individuals & Couples re: sexual dysfunction past 14 years. My advice is this: if you want to have gratifying sex (including orgasms) with another person, you need to stop masturbating so often (limit to 1 or 2 times/week, for example). This is NOT an ethical statement; just a factual ADVICE statement.

I've observed SO many instances (esp. men) where frequent, daily masturbation, made it extremely diificult for the patient to experience climax through other means (eg. vaginal penetration; oral sex, etc); this appears to be a combination of PHYSICAL + PSYCHOLOGICAL adaptation to masturbation (the type and texture of physical stimulation is different), whereby the penis becomes "trained" to orgasm only with the masturbatory method. Thus, my advice is to try to eliminate (or signif. decrease) the masturbation for awhile; then, try to re-adapt yourself in a sexual relat. with another person. It won't be easy at first, but with perseverence and determination you should be able to achieve desired goal.

Best, -Dr. Steve
