Can I ask some information about you?

Do you have a special need for vitamin D?

Do you use full covering clothing either for employment or religious grounds?

What exposure do you get in the summer?

What age range do you fall into?

What is your skin type, and ethnic origin?

These questions will help me identify the amount of vitamin D you are likley to need.

Thank you

As a gentleman over 70, your skin would be less able to take up the pro-versions of vitamin D from exposure to the sun. Normally we say that the exposure we get through the summer is sufficient to last all year round for adults under 70. Thise over 70 should have some sort of supplement.

However in your case, as you are in renal failure then you will be having problems making active vitamin D from the pro-compounds because the kidney plays a large role in metabolism.

Have a look at this site:

http://courses.washington.edu/bonephys/opvitD.html.

Therefore for you, there is no need to try to increase sun exposure in the winter months, as you need far higher doses of the active version of Vitamin D. Therefore you need to continue with the prescribed Vitamin D along with your other meds.
