Question

Should I be worried about my 2 yr having dificultly sitting up and an

Sent to Health Experts October 09, 2006 12:00 p.m.

I have a two and a half little boy. He was born with gastroschisis, but he seems to have no other problems with it except he has trouble sitting up without using his arms. He has learned to cope with weak stomache muscles. Should I be concerned and try to strengthen the muscles or just wait. He also chews on his fingernails, and toenails. I am constantly telling him to stop. He even figured out one time how to use the fingernail clippers and cut the nail so short it started to bleed. I have to lock the fingernail clippers up now. Should I be worried, any suggestions for helping him stop?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Gastroschisis patients, after surgery, require regular checkups for growth and development. However, the weak muscles usually recover well in time and you can follow a wait and watch procedure. The nail biting habit, on the other hand, is a behavorial problem and can be corrected with appropriate measures. You may consult the following link for some very useful advise. However, if they do not seem to be working, you should approach your paediatrician.
