I understand there is a new way to treat a small carcinoma in the kidney. The way I understand, it is not radiation, but it is preformed in the radiology dept.   A needle is inserted into the tumor and it is burned or cook.

Optional Information:
Male, Age: 65, Texas

Already Tried:
Trying to make a decision. 1. Surgery to remove part of kidney 2. the new procedure with the needle (cooking the turmor) and saving the good kidney 3. Just wait and watch to see if it grows.

I have had laronyx(sp) (throat) cancer, treated successfully with radiation, in 2000. I had heart bypass (4) surgery in 2000.
I take med for high blood pressure and colestrol(sp), sinus-allergies. I had both knees replaced in 2001, other than that I am in pretty good health.
Now I have this small 1 x 1.1 cm tumor. Also I have 4 large clusters of stones, 2 in each kidney and a bunch of small stones scattered throughout both kidneys.
I also have a slight dialation of the aorta just below the kidney

I did smoke, but haven't in 25 years.
We got all the results from the final test, this week.

Dear Customer (name blocked for privacy),

I can imagine that you are doing through a difficult time with this new diagnosis and I wish you the best of luck in making the right decision with how to proceed. There are several options, as you know, for removal of small masses of renal cell carcinoma. The new therapy to which I believe you are referring radiofrequency ablation where the tumor is destroyed with heat energy generated by radiofrequency. Since this is relatively new, the efficacy has not been proven as compared to surgery, but has been shown to be successful in removing tumors up to 5 cm in size. I am attaching more information about the procedure: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/448567.

I am attaching a link with patient information about renal cell carcinoma and treatment options: http://patients.uptodate.com/topic.asp?file=cancer/9134

I wish you the best of luck and am here if you have any more questions.
