My husband is scheduled for an MRA on Thursday ...

Sent to Health Experts November 12 01:13 PM

My husband is scheduled for an MRA on Thursday. (He had a slight stroke in September) I do not drive. After the MRA and the physician consultation, we have to go to a Parents of Murdered Children meeting honoring our deceased daughter. Will he be sedated? MRA is scheduled for 1 p.m., physician consult for 3 p.m. Do I need to line up a relative to drive downtown to the hospital to pick us up for the meeting, or will my husband be able to drive (POMC meeting is not until 6:30PM) Thanks!

Hello,

I am sorry for the loss of your daughter.

Your husband will not be sedated for the MRA. You would have been advised of the use of sedation by the ordering doctor and radiology department at the time the appointment was scheduled.

Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is a radiology test to study blood vessels, particularly those in the head, neck, lungs, kidneys and legs. An MRA is really a variation of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) but with the use of a contrast agent such as gadolinium. Without the gadolinium, it is not possible to distinguish the blood vessels from the surrounding tissue. Gadolinium does not cause sedation.

He will be fine by the time the meeting starts.

Let me know if you have questions.
