There are many reasons for blocked kidney--salvaging it depends
on what the blockage is--a tumor, a stone, stenosis, etc. The
urine flow could possibly be rerouted to a different area, but if the
kidney is unsalvageable and nonfunctioning and left in place, it could
make him sicker. There are times when it is better to remove the
kidney. The other kidney will take over the function of
both. I would get a second opinion before agreeing to lose the
kidney. Most
insurances will now pay for a second opinion to avoid surgery.
Good luck, Judy
