Question

what are blood tests results that indicate leukemia?

Sent to Health Experts June 14, 2006 7:23 a.m.

my husband was scheduled for hip replacement surgery at age 52. He has a history of rheumotoid arthritis , gout, and osteoarthritis. Much to our surprise pre surgery testing showed he was very anemic and they cancelled the surgey. He had a brother age 60 die less than one year ago of AML 2 months from date of diagnosis. I am very concerned about the blood work that has now been repeated 4 times and I still keep hearing them say they are concerned about the bone marrow factory. His RBC is 3.94 his Hemoglobin is 13.0 and Hematocrit is 36.0 on the most recent MCH is 39.0 and monocytes 8.5 all others were in normal range..I tend to be more reactive than proactive perhaps it has not been long enough since the painful time with his brother. The family DR is seemingly taking a wait and see attitude yet I feel it would be wiser to do the bone marrow bi opsy and rule out the worst case scenario... my question is are these numbers as such numbers that could be consistent with leukemia? or am I thinking completely in the wrong direction. I do understand the DR to be saying it is the hematocrit result that is bringing him concern . My husband is also in excruating pain with that hip and has been ready for the surgery for a year now this was a big disappointment to him and there has been no further conversation about it. Any information that could help us make some decsions would be apreciated. Thank you for this site I have been lookng for information for 48 hours and found this site most helpful .
