Question

brown/black vaginal discharge

Sent to Health Experts July 07, 2006 6:59 p.m.

I have a vaginal discharge that is brownish sometimes black and all the answers I read point to ovulation or menustration as the cause. I had my ovaries removed in '05 and uterus in '95 so these reasons don't seem to apply to me. Stangely enough after my ovaries were removed the discharge didn't occur until six weeks after surgery. This discharge is steadily increasing and at the end of the day, my panti liner is black. One gynocologist treated me for a bacterial infection on and off for a while and my new gyno said it wasn't a bacterial infection and can't determine the cause. He tested the discharge and it is not blood.   I recently had a colonoscopy and nothing showed up unusual with it. My urine doesn't show any infection or blood either.   I am really worried about this. Have you ever heard of this and where do I go from here? I am 48 years old.

Female , Age: 48

gynocology visits, colonoscopy, urine checked, called urologists

Hello

Sounds as though you may have a fistula from your bowels to your vagina. This won't turn up on a colonoscopy. Ask your doctor for further testing.

Both my gyno and gastro doctors checked for a fistula and did not find one and ruled it out. Also, there is no odor to this discharge. It starts out most days gray and then darkens until either it is black or the amount on my pads makes it dark. Any other ideas?

Gray/brown/black vaginal discharge. I have ad a full hysterctomy so anything related to menstrual cycle is out. Colonoscopy and several exams ruled out fistula. No blood/infection in urine. Where do I go from here?

Do you still have your cervix? If so, has a pap culture been done? Also, have your hormone levels been checked as well?

Thanks

I assume I still have my cervix. I will call the doc office to verify. I haven't had a pap smear in about 8 months. After my hyst. in Nov. I started on HRT. First a patch, then Estrace, then a testosterone one, then back on Estrodoial. I could ask the doc office if my hormone levels have been checked FYI, diabetes runs in my family too. I went to my internist the other day for another reason and he said my gyno was one of the best around and didn't want to second guess him. My gyno had said since he couldn't figure it out - just not to worry about it, but I can't help worrying about something as repulsive as this and especially when no one can diagnose or prevent it. Thanks so much.
