I have had 3 episodes over a period of 5 years of transient partial blindness in one eye. Lasted perhaps a minute...same field of vision loss each time. I am hypertensive (controlled) and have elevated cholesterol (controlled w/ Zocor) I am 75 years old and have trouble taking coated baby ASA (heartburn)...I had one 24 hour Holter monitor done which showed a very brief run of A. Fib. I am considering asking my MD to put me on Coumadin. What is your opinion?

Howdy from up here in "da Bronx".

This is a tough question to answer. The thing that confuses me is that the SAME visual field was involved each time. This suggests some sort of LOCAL problem. For a blood clot from intermittent A-fib to travel to the EXACT same tiny artery 3 times in a row seems strange.

Having said that, coumadin IS commonly recommended to patients with intermittent A-fib even without a known history of clots.

Asking your MD to consider putting you on coumadin is a good idea; seeing a cardiologist for a second opinion might be useful also.

And just a thought...plavix as an alternative to suggest if he rules out coumadin?

Thanks...will discuss further w/my cardiologist. Can't take Plavix or Aggrenox...don't tolerate them.
